A win for Warrington Wolves would see them end the evening back on top of Super League, a win for the Rhinos, however unlikely, would still see them end the round at the bottom of Super League.

Warrington were back at the Halliwell-Jones after being stunned by Castleford in Newcastle last weekend and looking to get back to winning ways. The Rhinos were hoping for just their fourth win in sixteen Super League XXI outings.

Both sides made numerous changes from last weeks sides but the bookies could only see one winner.

With just over a minute on the clock the Rhinos got the perfect start. Zak Hardakers kick-off found touch with the assistance of Kurt Gidleys boot and three plays into the set Danny McGuires grubber was grounded by Jimmy Keinhorst. Liam Sutcliffe converted from close to the touchline and Warrington were 6-0 down before they'd had hands on the ball.

On five minutes the Wolves opened their account. A miss-out pass from Ben Currie found Gene Ormsby on the overlap for a walk-in try past a pedestrian Leeds defence. Kurt Gidley converted from wide to level the scores.

The Rhinos had spent five sets camped in the Wolves twenty but the Warrington defence held firm, and when McGuire spilled the ball close to the line, the home side worked the ball downfield at pace with Chris Sandow putting in a pinpoint kick for Tom Lineham to catch and score. Gidley kicked the extras for 12-6.

On the half-hour Ryan Bailey went close and on the next play the ball Brad Dwyer went from acting half-back to outsmart the Leeds defence and stretch over the line to score. Gidley again added the extras and despite being in the game to this point the scoreline was looking increasingly familiar to the Rhinos.

On thirty-three a McGuire kick through took a ricochet and went into the hands of a grateful Brett Ferres who dived on the line to ground and score. Sutcliffe added the extras for 18-12 at half time.

Two minutes into the second half saw Gene Ormsby tap back a Sandow high kick into the hands of Ryan Atkins to walk over and score. Gidley slid the conversion attempt wide of the post for 22-12.

Six minutes later, and after Brett Ferres had been incorrectly penalised for a knock-on, Warrington used four tackles and work the ball wide left for Gene Ormsby to go over for his second of the evening. Gidley added a great conversion and the Wolves were heading back to the top of the table.

On fifty-one Brad Singleton and Ashton Sims were both sin-binned for a punch-up in front of the Leeds sticks.

On fifty-five Stefan Ratchford went through a gap and sped twenty metres to the line for Warringtons' sixth try of the night in what was starting to look like an exhibition match against a side with no answers. Gidley kicked another two pointer for 34-12.

Just after an hour and Warrington hit forty points, this time thanks to a Kurt Gidley burst through. Badly broken Leeds defensive line to score by the uprights. He added the extras for 40-12. Daryl Clark found a big gap on sixty-six to run past some lacklustre Leeds tackling and when Gidley added the extras it was 46-12.

It was mere consolation on sixty-eight when Brett Ferres found his way to the line off a Rob Burrow pass. Sutcliffe kicked the extras and now the Rhinos were behind by 46-18.

Warrington hit the fifty on seventy-three when Daryl Clark went over from five metres through a non-existent defence to score under the sticks. Gidleys conversion made it 52-18 and a comprehensive Warrington victory, their biggest Super League win over the Rhinos.

This was a professional Warrington Wolves performance but the visitors put up little resistance in their 'annus horribilis'. You can only play the opposition in front of you and the Wolves exploited the Rhinos weaknesses but will have been concerned that the Rhinos got over their line on three occasions. The Wolves are back on top of the table, the Rhinos are almost certainly in the middle eights.
