Two sides came into Magics' game five with two very different motivations. A win for the Saints would see them join four other sides on twenty points at the top of the pile, but a loss for the Giants would mean that it would be very difficult for them to make the top eight ahead of the split.

Saints had won their last three in Super League but none of them convincingly whereas Huddersfield narrowly lost to the Dragons last week after consecutive victories over fellow strugglers Leeds.

It had been an entertaining, end-to-end, opening twenty minutes before the Giants finally broke the deadlock when Jermaine McGillvary was at the end of a passing line to ground in the right corner. Danny Brough converted from the touchline for a 6-0 lead.

The Giants lead was doubled on twenty-six when Ukuma Ta'ai ran over the top of Shannon McDonnell to be carried over by his momentum and ground on the line. Brough added the extra two and it was the Giants who looked full of confidence.

On the kick-off return Jamie Ellis finished off an eighty metre passing move to score by the left corner flag. This time Brough failed to add the extras but with his side 16-0 ahead it was a dream opening thirty for the Claret and Golds.

Five minutes from the interval and Saints registered their first try when they kept the ball alive for Matty Dawson to come inside and score ten from the corner flag. Luke Walsh kicked from wide for 6-16 at the interval.

The second half was sixty seconds old when fourteen passes over fifty metres saw McGillvary get his second of the afternoon, once again wide right. Brough added the two from the touchline for 6-22.

Sam Rapira scored the Giants fifth try of the afternoon, converted by Danny Brough, and with thirty minutes left the game was looking beyond Saints.

A superb try on fifty-four extended the Giants lead. A delightful chip from Jake Connor on the full volley saw him chase and flip pass back to Aaron Murphy on the wing to drop over the line. Brough was again accurate with the boot for 34-6.

A fifty-seventh minute Jack Owens try off a Jordan Turner pass got Saints into double figures but when Walsh missed the conversion the Saints still trailed by twenty-four at 10-34. On the hour mark Grix fumbled a high kick allowing Jon Wilkin to pick up the loose ball and supply Theo Fages for a walk in. Walsh kicked the extras for 16-34.

Brough steadied the ship with a penalty on sixty-six to extend the lead to twenty points at 36-16.

Ten minutes from time and Saints moved the ball right, then left, before Fages found Adam Swift to score one-handed by the flag. Walsh missed the conversion attempt leaving Saints trailing by sixteen.

Ryan Hinchcliffe wrapped up the Giants win with his first try for his new side when he threw the dummy and crashed over. Brough again kicked the extras for 42-20.

A Cudjoe break on seventy eight put in the groundwork for Kyle Wood to go twenty metres to dive over by the uprights giving Brough a simple conversion form48-20 to seal a terrific fourth Super League win for the Giants, keeping them in touch with the top eight.

Despite a great start by Saints it was the Giants who controlled this game and who were deserving of the points. A neutral would be forgiven for thinking that it was the Giants who were challenging for the top of the table and not the Saints. The Giants got on a Saints-like momentum and made the most of it to take the all-important two points.
