It was top placed Warrington Wolves against seventh placed Castleford Tigers in game two from St James' Park in Newcastle.

Larne Patrick failed a late fitness test for Castleford handing Danny Tickle his first start for his new team. Ryan Bailey was making his debut in Primrose and Blue.

Warrington were looking to bounce back after last weekends defeat at the hands of Wakefield Wildcats and maintain their top of the table position.

It took just three minutes for Stefan Ratchford to pick up a loose ball, put to ground by the Tigers, and run fifty metres to score to the right of the uprights but the Kurt Gidley conversion drifted wide of the uprights. On eight Gidley grabbed the Wolves second of the afternoon after Castleford had been penalised for offside. He added the extras and put his side 10-0 ahead.

All the early traffic had been for the Wolves and that continued, but the defensive effort from the Tigers thwarted further scoring until the half hour. A Tigers attacking kick from Luke Gale was collected by Matty Russell on his own line, and returned seventy metres, before he passed the supporting Ben Currie to go the remaining thirty metres to score. Gidley again failed to convert but his side were edging ahead at 14-0.

An amazing Castleford try on thirty-four gave them a lifeline. Luke Dorn was the beneficiary but the ball had been kept alive on the last tackle, moving right to left to right through nine pairs of hands before Dorn found space wide right. Luke Gale converted on off the left upright to reduce the margin to eight at 6-14.

Just a minute from the interval and Grant Millington got the Tigers second after another never-say-die passage of play saw the ball thrown all across the field. Gale kicked the goal for 14-12 and a nail biter of a second half awaited.

Seven minutes into the second half and the Tigers hit the front. A kick to the corner from Luke Gale was collected by Denny Solomona and Wolves' Tom Lineham, both of them in full flight. Solomona won the wrestle to ground the ball. Gale missed the conversion from wide but the Tigers had the lead for the first time in the game.

Three minutes later and Castleford were starting the dominate as Mike McMeeken bust the Warrington line to stretch for the line and score, playing some scintillating passing football. Gale again failed to add the extras, the gap now six points.

Denny Solomona's second of the game came when he outpaced Tom Lineham in a move from the back of the scrum to improve the angle and give Gale a simple conversion for 26-14. Warrington had dominated the first half hour of the game but the second thirty had been all one-way traffic for the Tigers.

After a high tackle by Ashton Sims on Danny Tickle on the Wolves forty, Gale took the two points on offer to ensure that Warrington now needed to score three times to rescue the game.

On sixty-six Luke Dorn won the game for the Tigers after a Junior Moors break through the, now exhausted, Wolves defence. Luke Gale kicked the extra two for 34-14.

McShane slid a drop goal attempt wide on seventy-two but by that stage it was irrelevant. Warrington dominated the first thirty but Castleford steadied the ship and through an expansive passing game a steadfast defence they totally butchered the league leaders. Not a perfect Castleford display, but a perfect Castleford fifty minutes of thirty-four unanswered points.
