A full set of fixtures, all kicking off at three on a Sunday afternoon is a bit of a novelty for the Kingstone Press Championship.
Round ten threw up a number of intriguing ties with the Bulls visiting the Rams, the Bulldogs in the capital to take on the Broncos and the Eagles on the road to take on the Roughyeds.
Featherstone at Workington, Leigh hosting Whitehaven and Halifax at home to Swinton Lions all looked like bankers for the two points. But it's been a season of surprises.
The result of the day was a close run thing but we will start our round up with a sensational win for Swinton Lions over Halifax. Halifax were 16-0 ahead early on through tries from Greenwood, Smeaton and Ecclestone but Swinton replied though two from Marshall before Moore and Smeaton extended the home lead to 28-10. Barlow grabbed one for the Lions before the break but trailing by twelve it looked like another loss for the visitors. Marshall completed his hat-trick and Atkin added another to reduce the arrears to four before Kaye again extended the 'Fax lead. Hallett and Robinson tries levelled the score at 34-34 with eight minutes to play before a Moore drop-goal looked to have secured the points for Halifax. But that didn't account for a last minute winner from Marshall, his fourth in the game, and a famous win for the Lions by 38-35.
There was an equally exciting and stunning win for Oldham over the Sheffield Eagles, this time by a solitary point. Fozard and Yere got the Eagles off to a good start but Johnson reduced the arrears to 12-6 just before the interval. Ward and Hughes had given the Roughyeds an 18-12 lead but the margin was reduced to two by a second Fozard try. A Palfrey penalty made it 20-16 but James tied things up at 20-20 four from time. A Palfrey drop goal with two minutes left on the clock sealed the home win.
London Broncos made short work of high flying Batley Bulldogs as John Kear's side visited the capital. Two early tries form Williams opened up an 8-0 lead before the visitors only try of the day through Scott. Hellewell and Barthau added tried before half time for 20-8 and the Broncos were coasting. Second half tries from Kear and Loane sealed the 32-8 win as Batley had no response.
Dewsbury would have expected to put up a better battle than they did against a Bulls side still smarting from last weeks defeat at the hands of Sheffield, especially when the game was so close at the interval. Grant and Farrell scored for the Rams in the first half but two from Welham (in a haul of five on the day) and one from Gaskell made it 12-14 at the interval. The second half was one way traffic with two from Caro, three more from Welham, and one each from Mellor and Clare before a late Farrell consolation left the final score at 52-16.
There seems little that can now stop Leigh after their early season hiccups. Today they thrashed Whitehaven at the Leigh Sports Village with an eleven try haul from Paterson (3), Armstrong, Acton, Reynolds, Maitua, Kay (2), Weston and Hood. 'Havens sole response was a Riley try on the hour to avoid the ignominy of a nilling but the Centurions still won by 60-6.
Featherstone also got in on the points Avalanche with a 52-6 win over Workington Town. Davies, Hardman (2), Turner and Craven all scored first half tries for a 28-0 interval lead. Tag had added another before Town's only try of the day through Phillips but Featherstone weren't finished and added more tries through Ormondroyd, Cording and Davies for a nine try haul. |
