With the Broncos visit to Whitehaven on Saturday night falling victim to the weather, round nine of the Kingstone Press Championship comprised five games.
The Eagles were at the Bulls, the Centurions visited the Rams, Halifax travelled down the road the Featherstone, the Bulldogs went over the hill to play the Roughyeds and the Lions were at home to Workington.
The closest game of the afternoon was at Featherstone where the lead changed hands four times before a last minute Tyrer penalty won the game for the visitors. Moore and Lilley traded first half tries for a 6-6 scoreline at the break, and it was two second half tries apiece with Taulapapa and Turner scoring for Featherstone and Smeaton getting two for 'Fax. Lilley made up for missing one of the conversions with a penalty six minutes from time to tie the game at 18-18 and he must have thought he'd won it on seventy-nine when he kicked a drop goal. When Halifax got a penalty in the dying seconds Tyrer did the honours to snatch a 20-19 win.
It was a points festival at Odsal where Bradford and Sheffield shared seventy-four points including thirteen tries. The Bulls were 12-0 ahead through Addy and Gaskell before Aston, Minchella and Millar edged the Eagles ahead by six at the interval. Despite scoring three second half tries through Caro, Clare and Welham the Bulls were outplayed by a Sheffield side who registered twenty-eight second half points including tries for Lo(2), Mexico, Straughier and Tyson for a 46-28 win which lifts them to two points behind the Bulls.
Oldham recorded their second win of the season with a surprise victory over the high flying Batley Bulldogs. Lepori and Johnson had given the home side a 12-2 half time lead and that was extended to 28-2 thanks to two second half tries from Chisolm and one from Gee. The Bulldogs only tries of the game came in the last five minutes from Lillycrop and Rettie and were scant consolation as the leagues second placed side went down by 28-12.
Swinton Lions also got their second victory in a close game with fellow strugglers Workington. Fell, Littler, Lloyd and Atkin all scored for Lions in the first half while both of Workington's Murphys reduced the arrears at the interval to 20-10. Matti son and Sammut edged the visitors into a 22-26 lead just seven minutes into the second half but a converted Atkin try thirteen from the end took the points and lifted Swinton off the bottom at the expense of their visitors.
Leigh Centurions continued their good run to go two points clear at the top thanks to a 40-18 win over Dewsbury Rams. Leigh led 12-8 at the break as two tries from Hopkins were only answered by a single from Adamson. Higson, Reynolds, Kay, Paterson and Whiting put the game way beyond the Rams at 40-8 before late consolations from Morton and Teanby added some respectability to the 40-18 final scoreline. |
