The prize on offer at today's match at the Select Security Stadium was simply to secure Super League for 2016. With both Widnes Vikings and Salford Red Devils on eight points, two points would lift either side above the reach of fifth placed Bradford Bulls and into the safety zone.
While a loss wouldn't be the end of the road for either, the win would take the pressure off going into the last week.
It took just two minutes for the Red Devils to open the scoring when they moved the ball right then left before Junior Sau exploited the overlap to put Josh Griffin over in the corner. Michael Dobson missed the goal one conversion attempt. Dobson took advantage of a penalty three minutes later to extend the lead and Widnes were still looking to get their game started.
The Vikings got on the board on thirteen thanks to a Rhys Hanbury break and pass out to Patrick Ah Van who stepped out of a tackle to score in the corner. Danny Tickle couldn't convert from the left touchline leaving his side still two adrift.
When Scott Taylor dummied to the left from acting half back he created the space to dive over from two metres, giving Dobson a simple conversion for 12-4. The Devils seemed in total charge as Widnes struggled for a way into the game.
It was all one-way traffic when on twenty-seven Corey Paterson crashed over off a Tommy Lee pass to score under the sticks and give Dobson another simple two-pointer for an 18-4 lead.
Just short of the interval and Liam Hood saw yellow for the Red Devils after a high tackle on Kevin Brown which saw the Vikings half-back receiving on-field treatment. The Red Devils finished the half defending their own line but they managed to repel the Vikings until the interval.
Four minutes after the interval and Junior Sau extended the Devils lead as he stepped through a broken Vikings defence to ground. Dobson kicked the conversion from wide for 24-4.
Harrison Hansen saw yellow on fifty-seven after a leg-twist tackle and five minutes later Lloyd White used the extra man to run the angle and score next to the posts. Patrick Ah Van kicked the goal to add two more points and reduce the margin to 24-10.
As temperatures frayed further Josh Griffin and Kevin Brown were both red carded by referee Child after they exchanged punches and sparked a twenty-six man brawl. The Devils had now had two yellow and a red card but were still in total command.
The Reds dominated the game and made no mistakes in securing their place in Super League for 2016. Widnes need a win at home against Leigh centurions next week to join Salford and Hull KR but a loss could leave them in the million pound game.
